CALGARY, AB December 2013

Remembering the magic from when I was a little girl, you can’t imagine my excitement to be able to see Alberta Ballet’s rendition of The Nutcracker once again.

Comfortable in our seats, the backdrop even got us excited with it’s incredible detail and representation of a snowy evening in St. Petersburg. Opening night began with a speech from Calgary’s Mayor, Naheed Nenshi, he not only welcomed the crowd wearing a dapper tail tuxedo jacket, but appeared in the first number at Vishinsky’s party!

I like to think, magic on stage truly comes to life when you have an incredible on and off stage team. It’s not just what the naked eye sees but stems from an incredible line of intelligent and extremely creative individuals.  Calgary’s Philharmonic Orchestra, the choreography by Edmond Stripe, Alberta Ballet’s Artistic Director, Jean Grand-Maître, the conductor, Peter Dala, the costume and set designer, Zack Brown and of course the stage would not be seen without the genius lighting designer, Pierre Lavoie. Each and everyone of them bring the characters and scenes to life.

The Nutcracker is more than just a holiday classic, it allows young aspiring ballerinas the chance to perform with professional dancers and in a renowned theatre like the Jubilee Auditorium. It brings all walks of life to the audience and helps adults remember what it was like to be a child dreaming wildly at this time of year.

Klara, played by Akiko Ishii and her Nutcracker, Yukichi Hattori expressed a stunning chemistry and executed the choreography beautifully. Yet, one of my favorites from the evening had to be the Arabian trio.  Played by Reilley Bell, Kelley McKinlay and Colby Parsons, I was completely entranced by their dance. Bell’s flexibility and talent to show such versatility of movement within the ballet choreography was breathtaking.

I was moved by this exceptional holiday classic. Alberta Ballet is truly an outstanding company and I look forward to seeing their next flawless production!

Rihanna + Balmain Paris… do I even need to say more? Rocking 90s inspired amazingness, Rihanna steals the show and is captured by high fashion photography duo, Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. Styled by Mel Ottenberg with the infamous creative direction from Atelier Franck Durand this shoot was destined for greatness. Honestly, could there be anymore superstars involved?

I think I will be adding a leather jumpsuit and a herringbone suit to my wardrobe any day now… And her hair? Ughh… perfection!  Don’t worry about drooling all over your keyboard or Ipad, you wouldn’t be the first when it comes to this campaign. XO

Gift of Time

There’s nothing better than giving the gift of time. Now, I wish I was referring to a time machine (don’t we all?!), but this time I’m referring to watches. As a fashion accessory or for keeping on track, a watch adds style, class and changes up your arm party here and there.

Gift season is amongst us, and personally, receiving a watch as a gift is wonderful but only depending on the kind you give…no candy watches here ok? Whether you’re a sports junky, fashionista or just love the look, there’s a watch out there for us all!

Chanel, Dior, Hermes and Rolex steal the show, but that doesn’t mean you have to break the bank to have a watch that is gorgeous and functional! Michael Kors, Daniel Wellington, Anne Klein, Guess, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Bulova, Rue Du Rhone, Fossil & Swatch are excellent choices and are seen on so many celebrities! Check out some of my favourite picks for both men and woman!

A Jacket Story

Let’s be honest here…fall is by far the best season for fashion. The more layering the better and a great statement jacket keeps us on trend while staying warm and cozy. Whether you’re a fan of the classic parka or motorcycle jacket, having a variety on hand keeps your winter wardrobe interesting.  For one, if you’re chilled and don’t get a chance to show off your bangin outfit it’s all the more important to showcase the outerwear.  Don’t be afraid to layer a leather vest on top of your pea coat or throw your jacket over your shoulders for a super chic look! Chaos to Couture

Words by Kate Wotherspoon
Photos by

I wish I could tell you I attended the Met Gala and wore Vivienne Westwood, but then I would be a liar, liar with my Vivienne on fire! We wouldn’t want that even though it might be categorized as Punk Couture which would ultimately work for this post…

Punk is about not caring what others think and ultimately expressing yourself, which in the same breath is the same as personal style. I found some looks from the red carpet to be a little too “try-hard” and others way too “pretty in pink”. In another sense though, with punk and couture at par, anything goes! My top two looks were Sarah Jessica Parker in custom Giles and a Philip Treacy headpiece and Christina Ricci in Vivienne Westwood. I’m surprised more people didn’t cover themselves in Vivienne Westwood since she really brought the chaos to couture, but again, punk isn’t entirely plaid, studs and mohawks, it’s about putting ones personality at the forefront.

The Perfect Parallel || Nike x Liberty

Words and Photos by Kate Wotherspoon

Another perfect para||el? Nike Dunks with a wedge heel in collaboration with Liberty London’s iconic prints. Check these babies out!

Nike x Liberty Wedge Dunks

Nike x Liberty Wedge Dunks

Nike x Liberty Wedge Dunks

When I first saw everyone in Tommy Ton’s pics stomping around in Isabel Marant’s version last year, I was in denial with the whole look. Eventually, after a few more designers came out with their versions, the “sneaker heel” fad grew on me. (Now, here I am blogging about it…) I’m still picky with the look, but I feel Nike did a great job covering up the wedge aspect and they look so similar to regular Dunks! I’m a fan of Ash Footwear’s version too. Check these bad boys out:

I’ve been a longtime fan of Nike, but had my first dose of Liberty this past fall. Walking up to the store front all you see is a mini garden of potted plants and then behind those doors is a room full of round tables with the most beautifully printed scarves. Once you catch your breath and move up a floor, your heart beats faster as beautiful little rooms, floor after floor, are adorned with fresh of the runway merchandise. It’s a lot to take in and I plan to visit that store often once my wallet grows in width. Here are a few shots of the wonderful store front from my trip to London last fall.

Suki`s Salon || 40th Anniversary

Words & Photos by Kate Wotherspoon

Last Saturday, November 17th, I pulled up to the Vancouver Art Gallery for Suki’s 40th Anniversary party (along with another 1500 people) and felt like I was pulling up to the Met in New York City – minus a few obvious details… Since 1972, Suki’s has been delivering exceptional craftsmanship to the arts of hairdressing and with a red carpet entrance, the entire Gallery was covered head to toe with sculptural hair pieces and hair models.  Each floor and exhibit depicted Suki’s colourful history and was furnished completely by Jacqueline Conoir and Town Shoes.

What I would like to call the “Fiery Peacock”

Hair Models

Suki’s really knows how to throw a party, and better yet, they sure know how to present forty years of exceptional hair artistry throughout an entire art gallery! One hair masterpiece after another left me speechless and made me think twice about my hairdo for the evening and everyday for that matter.

Leather & Feathers

After photographing almost everything I laid eyes on, I made my way up to the top floor balcony. With a view that overlooked Robson Square and incredible tunes played by DJ P. Deady, I got my dance on with some great company. Unfortunately, my Wangs weren’t cut out for all my dance moves and I was left to hobble not strut out of the gallery at the end of the evening…

Kyle Foo is definitely a name to know!  We met at Blanche Macdonald and quickly became a duo that did everything together.  With similar tastes and a drive for success, Kyle Foo was my partner in crime and life line at school.  We compared assignments while eating pancakes at Dennys and quizzing each other for the next exam till the sun came up but that’s another story…

Dressing well comes naturally to Kyle and he has a serious love affair with designer handbags – and I mean serious!  He’s even looking at designing his own handbag line and I’m telling you now they will become the season’s must-haves!

He’s currently the assistant manager at Moulé in West Vancouver, a high-end boutique for home décor and designer clothing, and is an aspiring accessories buyer. Quickly after graduating school he was already producing a spring fashion show for the Lioness Club with mutual friend, Mary-Elyn Keenan (also a name to know) and is seen assisting at many fashion events around Vancouver. Anyone who meets this guy is quickly intrigued and is always left with a smile on their face and in my case, left with aching abs from laughing so hard.

He shares my obsession with studs and prints and is seen here wearing just that.  Enjoy the interview and photos below!

Style Feature || Jerome Esplana

Photos & Words by Kate Wotherspoon

Allow me to introduce you to someone who is driven, hardworking, stylish and continuously perfecting his talent each and every day – ladies & gentleman… Jerome Esplana!   He’s a force to reckon with from the West Coast but is the most down to earth and funny guy you will ever meet.  His dance videos are taking over the virtual world via his youtube channel (which features beast dancers from Vancouver, Seattle and Los Angeles etc.) and he can be caught throughout Europe teaching master classes in London, Germany and Austria.

Not only has teaching around the world become part of his daily schedule, he also runs a hip hop crew in Vancouver called TwoFourSeven Company with close friend and Diamond Crew member, Roberta Bierman.  In addition, he is a part of The Faculty Crew which took home the World of Dance Champions title more than once this year!  He’s only in his young twenties and his list of accomplishments does not end soon…

On the style end, I’ve caught Jerome rocking button downs with bow ties or casual trendy looks like the one below; not to mention he probably owns every Mickey Mouse graphic shirt ever made and makes it trendy.

You’ll love his interview and should probably join the thousands obsessing over his latest dance videos on youtube.

Enjoy. xx

Kate W: What is your current state of mind?

Jerome E: I’m really happy.  Great things even stem from bad.

KW: Where do you feel most at home?

JE: When I’m dancing.

KW: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

JE: “Never Give Up”. It’s straight forward, but it’s true in any industry, even in the youtube world.

KW: Which living person do you most admire?

JE: Will Smith. He’s very accomplished, seems quite humble, wise and is one of my favorite actors.

KW: What was the last thing you bought?

JE: A costume piece for the 247 Company.

KW: What makes you laugh?

JE: Oh my God. Everything!

KW: If you could dance in any music video, which one would it be?

JE: I have three! First would be Michael Jackson’s “Bad” , second would be Janet Jackson’s “Rhythmnation” and Justin Timberlake’s “Like I Love You”.

KW: Which dancer, choreographer or artist would you want to share the stage with the most?

JE: Justin Timberlake. I’m always a fan of his work, and again I feel he’s humble. He has incredible stage presence and his concerts are always insane.

KW: What has been your greatest extravagance thus far?

JE: Performing at the Vancouver Winter Olympics and travelling the world teaching dance.

KW: What is your favorite dance city?

JE: First, I have to say Vancouver for it’s incredible potential and talent. Vancouver has a very driven dance community.  Secondly it would be LA. There’s many different vibes present, even from studio to studio.  I also feel ML (Movement Lifestyle in NoHo) is my second home; I have very close friends there and the studio itself has a great vibe and inspiring talent.

KW: What is your favorite fashion city?

JE: London. It’s so fashionable and trendy with a certain maturity.  It’s exactly how I want to dress.

KW: If you were to dance in this outfit you’re currently wearing, would you change anything?

JE: Nope!

KW: Cat or Dog?

JE: Dog.

KW: Black or white?

JE: Ughhh… I love both!

KW: What’s your number one breakfast dish?

JE: That’s really hard, I love food. Any kind of meal makes me happy and I’m happy eating cereal for dinner.

KW: Name some songs on your playlist.

JE: Backstreet Boys “Get Down” , N’Sync “This I Promise You” and Usher “Superstar”.

KW: Do you dress mostly by your mood or the day’s events?

JE: Weather actually plays a huge part, or if I find something in my closet I haven’t worn for awhile. I find I’ll wear certain colours depending on my mood too.

KW: What is your signature piece?

JE: My gold watch.

KW: Which shoes do you love to dance in?

JE: My Vans.

KW: Favorite colour(s)?

JE: Neutrals.

KW: Suspenders or bow ties?

JE: Both!

KW: What’s next for you?

JE: I’m aiming to choreograph for artists like Justin Timberlake and if I wasn’t dancing, I would want to be an architect.

KW: Thank you so much Jerome!
